Brookstone Tabletop Fire Pit — Texas Burn Injury Attorneys
In January 2026, a lawsuit was filed by Michelle K., woman from Michigan who suffered 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns when a Brookstone® Tabletop Fire Pit from Macy’s suddenly exploded.
The lawsuit also includes her husband, who is suing Macy’s and the fire pit manufacturer for loss of consortium.
What Happened?
According to the complaint, the couple purchased the Brookstone Tabletop Fire Pit and had been using it normally. However, when they were using it on June 21, 2025, the flames appeared to go out.
When he tried to re-light the fire pit by pouring in more liquid fuel, “the fire pit suddenly exploded.”
Fire Pit Explosion Caused Severe 3rd-Degree Burn Injuries
The lawsuit includes graphic photos of her body wrapped in bandages, being taken to the hospital on a stretcher. In the hospital, she was treated for severe 2nd- and 3rd-degree burn injuries that covered a large part of her upper body, including most of her face, chest, and neck.
Legal Claim in Tabletop Fire Pit Lawsuit
In her lawsuit, she blames her injuries on a lack of warnings from Macy’s regarding the severe fire hazards. She also blames the manufacturers for selling a product that was defectively designed and manufactured, and unreasonably dangerous for its intended use due to these design flaws.
Her lawsuit was filed against Macy’s Retail Holdings LLC, BKST Brand Holdings (doing business as Brookstone), and Southern Telecom Inc. on January 15, 2026 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan — Case 1:26-cv-00158.
Why Are Tabletop Fire Pits So Dangerous?
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued several warnings against using any type of tabletop fire pit that burns liquid alcohol or other fuel due to burn and fire hazards.
What is the Risk?
The risks include burn injuries, fire hazards, and “flame-jetting,” which is a violent explosion that can occur when people are attempting to re-light a fire pit that seems to have been extinguished. Instead, flame-jetting is a massive explosion that occurs when an invisible flame or vapors from burning liquid alcohol suddenly ignite.
Alcohol-Fueled Tabletop Fire Pit Flames Burn At Over 1,600ºF
The jet of flames from the explosion can spread for several feet. Burning liquid alcohol can easily reach temperatures exceeding 1,600ºF. The cloud of burning vapors and droplets of burning fuel can instantly causing 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns to anyone who is unlucky enough to get caught in the explosion.
