BMW recalled over 45,000 7-Series luxury sedans (model-years 2005-2008) in the U.S. due to ongoing problems with the automatic doors opening unexpectedly when the car is being driven.

What is the problem?
BMW determined that “a hardware component [one of various sensors] of the latch or door handle could fail.” BMW says the doors may appear to be closed when they are not latched.
What is the Risk?
The doors may swing open when the car is being driven due to road conditions, or if the driver leans on the door. If this occurs, the driver or passengers may be ejected from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a serious injury or crash.
BMW 7-Series Recall
BMW recalled 7-Series vehicles from the 2005-2008 model years with “Comfort Access” or “Soft Close Automatic” doors that close more gently than traditional doors. The recall involves the following models:
- 745i
- 745Li
- 750i
- 750Li
- 760i
- 760Li
- B7 Alpina
The recall was issued after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) asked BMW to investigate reports of BMW 7-Series doors opening unexpectedly. The agency also asked BMW to check if a previous recall for a similar problem actually worked.
BMW Soft Close Door Recall
About 7,500 of the recalled BMWs were previously recalled in 2012 for the same problem. At the time, BMW said it was investigating a software error that caused the doors to swing open. In the latest recall, BMW did not explain what was causing the doors to open suddenly.
What Should I Do?
BMW is sending known owners of the recalled 7-Series vehicles a letter explaining the problem. Owners will be asked to make an appointment to fix the defect when a repair is available. Until then, make sure your seatbelt is fastened and do not lean on the door.
