2 Million Black+Decker Garment Steamers Recalled
In April 2024, about 2 million Black+Decker Garment Steamers were recalled by Empower Brands after at least 100 people were burned by extremely hot water.
What is the Problem?
The recalled Black+Decker Garment Steamers can expel, spray, or leak hot water during use, posing a burn hazard to consumers.
How Many People Were Injured?
Empower Brands received more than 500 reports of hot water being expelled from the recalled steamers, including 114 reports of burn injuries, and 9 people who suffered severe 2nd-degree burns.
Of these injuries, 82 people were burned after the original recall was announced in November 2022.
Expanded Recall Announced After More People Burned
The recall was a major expansion of a previous recall issued in November 2022, which only involved 518,500 units. At that time, there were 32 reports of burn injuries, including 2nd-degree burns. Black+Decker did not offer a refund, and only offered to fix the steamers with a free replacement upper assembly.
Repaired Garment Steamers Still Pose Burn Hazard
After the November 2022 recall, Black+Decker continued to receive reports of people who were burned, including people who had “fixed” their recalled garment steamers with the new upper assembly.
According to Empower Brands, “94 of these incident reports involved units that were repaired as part of the original recall or models featuring the updated design, including 19 burn injuries.”
How To Identify Recalled Garment Steamers
This recall expansion involves all BLACK+DECKER Model HGS011 Easy Garment Steamers, including those that were repaired as part of the previous recall in November 2022.
These garment steamers were sold in a variety of colors. They have the name “BLACK+DECKER” on the base of the steamer.
The recalled Black+Decker Garment Steamers were sold at Walmart, Target, Amazon, Bed Bath & Beyond, other stores nationwide and online from June 2021 through February 2024 for $16 to $23.
