BISSELL Recalls 3.2 Million Steam Cleaners for Burn Hazard
In July 2024, BISSELL recalled more than 3.2 million BISSELL Steam Shot Handheld Steam Cleaners that were sold since 2008 after reports of hot water burns and scalds.
What Happened?
BISSELL said it received 183 reports of hot water or steam escaping from the recalled steam cleaners. The recalled steam cleaners can “expel hot water or steam onto users while heating or during use,” according to the recall. This poses a risk of hot water burns (scalds).
How Many People Were Burned?
At least 157 people suffered minor burn injuries when they were hit by extremely hot water or steam from a recalled BISSELL Steam Shot Handheld Steam Cleaner, according to the recall notice.
What is a Scald?
Burns and scalds occur when hot water or steam comes into contact with skin. These burns are usually minor 1st- or 2nd-degree burns, but they can be extremely painful.
In some cases, hot water burns or steam scalds cause 3rd-degree burns, especially when there is prolonged contact due to the water soaking into clothing, or the steam burns a large section of skin.
What is the Risk?
Scalds and hot water burns can cause the following symptoms:
- Pain
- Redness
- Skin swelling
- Blisters
- Skin turns red, white, or splotchy
- Peeling skin
- Discoloration of the skin
- 3rd-degree burns may cause scarring or need medical treatment
