What is Beovu?

Beovu (generic: brolucizumab) is a prescription eye injection for the treatment of neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

What is the Problem?

Instead of improving vision, dozens of patients who were treated with Beovu have suffered vision loss, blindness, and other severe eye problems due to severe inflammation in the retina.

Similar Medications Not Linked to Retinal Vasculitis

Beovu was initially advertised by Novartis as a longer-lasting treatment for wet AMD. Unfortunately, many patients developed severe inflammation, which may be due to a delayed hypersensitivity reaction.

Beovu Side Effects

  • Vision loss
  • Blindness
  • Eye inflammation
  • Other eye problems
  • Retinal vasculitis
  • Occlusive retinal vasculitis
  • Retinal vascular occlusion
  • Intraocular inflammation
  • Uveitis

What Should I Do?

Novartis asks Beovu patients to seek emergency medical care from an ophthalmologist if they experience eye redness, sensitivity to light, eye pain, or vision changes (i.e. blurry vision, increase in “floaters”).

Who Has The Highest Risk?

The highest risk of severe eye problems from Beovu (within 6 months of their 1st injection) are patients who have previously had eye inflammation and/or vascular occlusion in the 12 months before starting treatment with Beovu, according to Novartis.

FDA & European Health Officials Add Safety Warnings

In June 2020, Novartis announced that the FDA had approved a label update with warnings about “retinal vasculitis” and “retinal vascular occlusion” from Beovu.

Retina Specialists Report 26 Cases of Occlusive Retinal Vasculitis from Beovu

In February 2020, the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) issued the first warning about reports linking Beovu and severe eye inflammation. By March 27, the group said it was aware of 26 cases of occlusive retinal vasculitis, which can lead to blindness.

More Eye Experts Warn Against Using Beovu

Beovu is the only drug in its class that is linked to a severe, vision-threatening type of eye inflammation called retinal vasculitis.

With other options available for treating age-related macular degeneration, experts are warning doctors not to use Beovu:

“Brolucizumab is not the only drug that can be used for the treatment of eAMD. In the face of the known risk, its use is unwarranted.” – American Journal of Ophthalmology, Is This a 737 Max Moment for Brolucizumab? (May 25, 2020)

Case Report: Woman Loses Vision After 2 Beovu Injections

In August 2020, doctors reported a 77 year-old woman who suffered severe vision loss in her right eye after her second injection of Beovu.

According to the report, she initially noticed blurry vision immediately after her injection with Beovu, but believed it would be temporary. Three weeks later, she returned to the office with a visual acuity of 20/200 OU, which is considered to be severe visual impairment.

Unlike Beovu, Other Eye Injections Are Not Linked to Retinal Vasculitis

Beovu belongs to a class of eye injections called anti-VEGF medications. These injections treat wet AMD by temporarily stopping abnormal blood vessels growing in the eye. The blood vessels eventually grow back, so the injections must be repeated every 4-6 weeks.

Beovu is unique because it is injected every 3 months, rather than every 4-6 weeks. The difference is that Beovu is linked to dozens of cases of retinal vasculitis. For the other anti-VEGF medications, retinal vasculitis is a very rare side effect.

These other anti-VEGF medications for wet macular degeneration include:

  • Macugen (pegaptanib)
  • Avastin (bevacizumab)
  • Lucentis (ranibizumab)
  • Eylea (aflibercept)

Were You Injured by Beovu?

Novartis is facing a growing number of complaints from patients who suffered vision loss and blindness from Beovu. Tragically, many of these patients believed that Beovu would improve their vision — but instead, they suffered devastating side effects that destroyed their vision permanently.
