In 2018, a lawsuit was filed against Goalsetter by the family of Nolan G., a 14-year-old boy who was hit and killed by a 260-pound basketball goal that fell off the wall at his home in Granger, Indiana.
The lawsuit accuses Goalsetter of failing to provide the necessary hardware and instructions to safely mount the basketball goal. The lawsuit also names two local contractors who installed the basketball goal using only 6 two-inch lag screws into drywall and particle board.

In September 2022, Spalding recalled around 13,400 portable basketball hoops after 2 people were injured when the backboard fell off the pole.
