In December 2022, about 18,000 Goalsetter Wall-Mounted Basketball Goals were recalled after the tragic death of a 14-year-old boy in Indiana who was hit by a backboard that fell off the wall.

Lawsuit Filed by Family of Teenage Boy Who Died

In 2018, a lawsuit was filed against Goalsetter by the family of Nolan G., a 14-year-old boy who was hit and killed by a 260-pound basketball goal that fell off the wall at his home in Granger, Indiana.

The lawsuit accuses Goalsetter of failing to provide the necessary hardware and instructions to safely mount the basketball goal. The lawsuit also names two local contractors who installed the basketball goal using only 6 two-inch lag screws into drywall and particle board.

What Goalsetter Basketball Hoops Were Recalled?

Goalsetter recalled all Goalsetter® Adjustable and Fixed Wall-Mount and GS Baseline Series Basketball Goals (72-inch, 60-inch, 54-inch, and 48-inch). They were sold from November 1999 through June 2022 at SCHEELS and other stores nationwide for $919 to $2,250.

Spalding Basketball Hoops Recalled After Falling Backboards Injure 2 People

Texas Basketball Hoop Injury LawyerIn September 2022, Spalding recalled around 13,400 portable basketball hoops after 2 people were injured when the backboard fell off the pole.

According to the recall, the “welds in the arm attaching the backboard to the pole can fail and cause the backboard to fall, posing an impact injury hazard to consumers.” There were 26 reports of weld failures.

Two people were severely injured when they were hit by a falling backboard. One person was hit in the head, but survived. The other person was hit on their shoulder and torso.

The recall involves Spalding Momentous EZ Portable Basketball Goals. They were sold at Academy and Scheels stores nationwide and online from May 2021 to April 2022 for $400 to $600.
