Barton Pressure Cooker Linked to Severe Burn Injuries

In April 2024, a victim cooking at home suffered severe injuries when a Barton 8 Quart Aluminum Stovetop Pressure Cooker (Model 99901-H2) suddenly exploded.

According to a federal lawsuit filed against the manufacturer, the explosion occurred approximately 30 to 40 minutes into cooking, sending boiling hot liquid across the victim’s face, arms, chest, stomach, and underarms.

The victim had purchased the pressure cooker through the Walmart app in March 2024 and had used it just twice before the explosion.

The lawsuit alleges she followed all safety instructions each time she used the product, including inspecting the gasket, confirming the vent was clear, and locking the lid before cooking.

The case was filed against Stark Group, LLC, the California company that manufactures and distributes the Barton line of stovetop pressure cookers under the brand names Stark USA and Stark Tools USA.

The lawsuit is currently pending in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana (Case No. 3:26-CV-392).

What Injuries Were Reported?

The victim in this case was treated at a hospital emergency room on the day of the explosion for burns and blisters to her mouth, lower face, chest, and arms. Within days, she began care at a dedicated burn clinic for second and third degree scald burns to her face, chest, and both upper extremities.

Within two months, her medical team prescribed six months of occupational therapy at a medical center burn unit for scar management across her upper limbs, along with daily compression garments to prevent contractures and scar banding. At the time of the lawsuit, she continued to receive active burn treatment.

The lawsuit documents permanent scarring and disfigurement and alleges damages including medical expenses, physical pain and suffering, mental anguish, embarrassment, disability, and loss of enjoyment of life.

What Defects Does the Lawsuit Allege?

The lawsuit was filed under the Louisiana Products Liability Act and alleges the Barton 8 Quart Stovetop Pressure Cooker was unreasonably dangerous in its design, manufacture, and warnings.

The complaint alleges the product contained a manufacturing flaw or defect in its construction or composition that allowed the explosion to occur during normal, foreseeable use.

The complaint also alleges that the design of the product allowed this type of failure to occur and that the manufacturer failed to provide adequate warnings about the pressure cooker’s potentially dangerous characteristics. Additional allegations include the product lacking safety features necessary to prevent this type of sudden, catastrophic pressure release.

Where Was the Barton Pressure Cooker Sold?

The Barton 8 Quart Aluminum Stovetop Pressure Cooker Model 99901-H2 was sold through major retail platforms including the Walmart app. Barton-brand pressure cookers have been widely sold through online channels, including to Texas residents across Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, and beyond.

Texans who purchased a Barton stovetop pressure cooker through Walmart or another online retailer and experienced an explosion or unexpected pressure release should contact a Texas product liability lawyer to understand their rights.

Pressure cookers are used in kitchens across Texas every day. When these products fail suddenly and without warning, the results can be devastating, including severe burns, scarring, disfigurement, and long-term physical and emotional consequences.

When a manufacturer places a dangerously defective product into the stream of commerce, injured consumers may be entitled to compensation for their medical bills, lost income, pain and suffering, and other damages. A Texas pressure cooker burn lawyer can evaluate your case and advise you on your options.

If you or a family member was burned by a Barton stovetop pressure cooker in Texas, do not wait. Time limits apply to product liability claims in Texas.
