Overview
Temporary inferior vena cava (IVC) filters are used for short-term protection against pulmonary embolism, which is a life-threatening medical emergency in which blood clots from the legs (also known as deep vein thrombosis) travel in the body and get stuck in the lungs.
FDA Warning
In August 2010, the FDA issued a warning about nearly 1,000 adverse events involving temporary filters. In many cases, the filters were left implanted long after the risk of pulmonary embolism subsided.

Tempofilter I Problems
The Tempofilter I is a first-generation IVC filter made by B. Braun. However, further development was suspended after several incidents in which the filter migrated into a patient’s heart due to the catheter buckling, including one case that was fatal.
Tempofilter II Problems
B. Braun fixed problems with structural stability in the Tempofilter II, but there have still been reports of patients who were injured. In one report from 2011, a 62 year-old man was implanted with the filter and had it removed three weeks later. Unfortunately, one of the filter legs fractured and became embedded in the vena cava wall.
Study Investigates Safety of B. Braun VenaTech LP Filter
In December 2015, researchers began enrolling patients in a study that will determine the safety and effectiveness of IVC filters. Over the next five years, about 2,100 patients at 60 hospitals will participate in the PRESERVE clinical trial.
About 300 patients will be implanted with the VenaTech LP IVC filter made by B. Braun International Systems Inc. Each patient will stay in the study for three years, or until one month after the filter is remove.
