March 23, 2019 — Henry Avocado Corporation has announced a recall for California-grown whole avocados and organic avocados due to a risk of Listeria.
Where Were the Recalled Avocados Sold?
The recalled avocados were packed at Henry Avocado’s packing facility in California and distributed in Arizona, California, Florida New Hampshire, North Carolina and Wisconsin.
Bravocado and Organic California Avocados Recalled
Consumers can identify the recalled avocados by the “Bravocado” stickers on the avocado. However, the recalled organic avocados do not carry the “Bravocado” label on the sticker — instead, those avocados are labeled “organic” and include “California” on the sticker.
What is the Problem?
No illnesses are linked to the recalled avocados. The recall was issued after positive test results for Listeria on samples taken during a routine government inspection at its California packing facility.
Symptoms of Listeria Food Poisoning
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal food poisoning infections. The symptoms can take up to 70 days to appear, and include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
Complications of Listeria Food Poisoning
The illness can quickly progress to a bloodstream infection (septicemia), meningitis (brain inflammation), encephalitis, brain abscesses, or other life-threatening complication. In pregnant women, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
