Art of Green Detergent Recalled for Bacterial Infection Risk
In December 2022, a company based in Houston, Texas announced a recall for about 14,550 bottles of Art of Green® Laundry Detergent due to a risk of severe bacterial infections.
What is the Problem?
No infections were reported, but the recalled detergents may be contaminated with dangerous bacteria.
These bacteria may include Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is an opportunistic germ that could cause serious infections in people with underlying health issues.
Was My Laundry Detergent Recalled?
The recalled Art of Green® laundry detergents were sold nationwide from April 2022 to October 2022 at Save Mart, Lucky and Food Maxx regional stores, and online at Amazon.com for $6 to $25.
The recalled products include:
- Art of Green® Free and Clear Laundry Detergent (100-oz. Bottles)
- Zen Lavender Garden Laundry Detergent (100-oz. bottles and 33.8-oz. pouches)
What is Pseudomonas?
Pseudomonas is a bacteria that is commonly found in soil and water. Infections can be highly antibiotic-resistant, making treatment very difficult, and increasing the risk of severe complications or death.
Pseudomonas can get into the body through the eyes, if it is breathed in the air, or broken skin, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Who Is At Risk?
Healthy people usually face a low risk of infections with Pseudomonas. The recall warns about “a risk of serious infection that may require medical treatment” for people who have certain underlying health issues that weaken their immune system, or people who use external medical devices like ventilators.
