FDA Warning for Apricot Power Linked to Deadly Risk of Cyanide Poisoning
In May 2024, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning about toxic amygdalin in Apricot Power® raw bitter apricot seeds.
The company has refused to issue a recall, even after being notified of the test results, which prompted the FDA to issue a safety warning.
What Happened?
The FDA reviewed test results on three samples of Apricot Power® raw bitter apricot seeds that were collected by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).
The “analysis determined that the Apricot Power products identified with the lot numbers above contain high levels of amygdalin, which, when consumed, could lead to fatal cyanide toxicity.”

What Are Bitter Apricot Kernels?
Bitter apricot kernels are the seeds inside the pit or stone of an apricot fruit. They look similar to an almond and have an almond-like taste, but they contain a dangerous compound called amygdalin, which the body converts into cyanide. Eating just a few apricot kernels can be deadly.
Amygdalin Advertised As Alternative Cancer Treatment
Apricot kernels contain amygdalin, a toxic and bitter substance found in fruit pits that is also advertised as “Vitamin B17” or “laetrile.” Amygdalin is promoted as an alternative cancer treatment, but this is not supported by scientific evidence.
