Apollo Phantom E-Scooters Recalled for Crash Hazard

On August 31, 2023, the e-scooter company Apollo announced a voluntary recall for about 3,900 Apollo Phantom Electric Scooters after several people were injured in crashes.

What is the Problem?

The recall involves e-scooters that are designed with a single bolt that attaches the stem of the scooter to the suspension and wheel assembly.

Unfortunately, “The bolt on the electric scooter can come loose causing the suspension and wheel assembly to separate, posing fall and injury hazards,” according to the recall notice.

How Many People Were Injured?

At least 3 people were injured in crashes when the bolt on the e-scooter stem loosened or broke off. There were 7 reports of the bolt breaking or loosening, resulting in the stem detaching or loosening.

Apollo Sending Customers Replacement Bolt

Apollo believes that the problem can be fixed by sending customers a free replacement bolt. The repair will involve replacing the original A2-70 Stainless Steel Bolt with a stronger Grade 12.9 Steel Bolt, which is now standard on the current Phantom e-scooter models.

What Should I Do?

Apollo is urging customers to NOT ride their Phantom E-Scooter until a Grade 12.9 Steel Bolt has been installed. After the bolt is replaced, every 500 km the bolt should be tightened to 40-50 Nm with a torque wrench, as part of routine preventative maintenance for the scooter.

Was My E-Scooter Recalled?

The recalled e-scooters include the Apollo Phantom V1, Phantom V2, and Phantom 60V. They were sold online to customers nationwide from June 2021 through May 2023 for between $2,000 and $2,500.

How Do I Install the Bolt?
