B. Braun Halts Certain Aesculap Knee Implants Due to Critical Risk of Loosening
In November 2020, B. Braun sent surgeons a warning letter to stop implanting certain Aesculap knee replacements due to a “possible malfunction.”
B. Braun said it was investigating reports of patients who needed revision surgery when their Aesculap Univation X Knee Replacement System loosened and needed revision surgery.
B. Braun called the risk “critical” to patients, and asked surgeons to stop implants through January 31, 2021. Even so, the company was “not assuming a product-related malfunction.”
According to the letter, a “locally accumulated number of aseptic loosenings have been reported to us in connection with the Univation X System. ln the affected patients, the loosened knee endoprostheses had to be revised or will be revised.”
Aseculap Knee Implant Lawsuits
Dozens of lawsuits accuse B. Braun and its subsidiary, Aesculap Implant Systems, of selling defective knee replacements, hiding problems from the FDA, and failing to warn surgeons and patients.
What is the Problem?
According to lawsuits, Aesculap sold knee implants that failed to adhere to the patient’s bones. When a knee implant does not stick to the cement on a patient’s bones, it can loosen and fail early.

Loose Knee Implants May Need Revision Surgery
When a knee replacement loosens, often the only treatment is a revision surgery to take out the bad implant and put in another one. All surgeries have serious risks. Patients may suffer from permanent bone loss, muscle damage, one leg shorter than the other, and other complications.
Surgeons Report Problems with Loose Knee Implants
There were many reports from surgeons who noticed the problem during follow-up surgeries, but Aesculap never issued a recall. In one report, a surgeon said “the implant components were easily removed by hand, using just two fingers, or after a single mallet strike.”
Aseculap Knee Implants Fail to Bond to Bones
Aesculap advertised their ceramic-coated knee replacements as “advanced surface” implants. The ceramic surface repelled moisture, but unfortunately, moisture could accumulate on the surface of the implant, according to lawsuits. Moisture on the implant could interfere with bone cement “gluing” to the implant.
Group of 31 Patients File Aesculap Knee Implant Lawsuit in Philadelphia
In November 2017, a group of 25 patients filed knee replacement lawsuits against Aesculap in Los Angeles Superior Court in California.
In March 2018, after California challenged whether their court had jurisdiction, the Aesculap knee implant lawsuits were re-filed in Philadelphia with 31 plaintiffs.
