Benzene Found in Benzoyl Peroxide (BPO) Acne Products

The independent testing agency Valisure requested a recall for Benzoyl Peroxide (BPO) acne products after their tests found high levels of benzene.

How Much Benzene Was Found in Acne Products?

Valisure discovered that nearly all BPO acne products tested positive for benzene. The FDA allows acne products to contain up to 2 parts per million (ppm) of benzene, but Valisure’s tests discovered that some BPO acne products had thousands of times higher amounts.

Acne products with the highest levels of benzene included:

  • Proactiv 2.5% BPO cream (1,761 ppm benzene)
  • Target’s Up & Up 2.5% BPO cream (1,598 ppm benzene)
  • Estee Lauder’s Clinique 2.5% BPO cream (401 ppm benzene)
  • Clearasil 10% BPO cream (308 ppm benzene)
  • Walgreens 10% BPO cream (114 ppm benzene)

What Acne Products Had Benzene?

How Does Benzene Get Into Acne Cream?

Benzene is not intentionally added as an ingredient to acne products. Instead, benzene is created when another ingredient, Benzoyl Peroxide (BPO), breaks down over time or under high temperatures.

What Happened?

In March 2024, the independent laboratory Valisure LLC tested dozens of acne creams, lotions, gels, face washes and other products.

They discovered that acne products with Benzoyl Peroxide (BPO) tested positive for benzene contamination. The amount of benzene increased dramatically when BPO acne products were stored at high temperatures, equivalent to a hot car or a steamy hot bathroom.

Benzene Gas May Leak Through Acne Product Packages

People can be exposed to benzene gas by breathing it in the air when it leaks through the package of a BPO acne product. Valisure found that an unopened tube of Proactiv released high amounts of benzene when it was kept at 104ºF for about 17 hours:

“The incubation of a Proactiv product at the temperature of a hot car resulted in the detection of benzene in a compact car’s volume of air at approximately 1,270 times the Environmental Protection Agency’s calculated threshold for increased cancer risk by long-term inhalation exposure to benzene.”

What is the Problem?

Benzene is a chemical that is known to cause cancer in people. The risk increases with higher amounts of benzene over a longer period of time. The problem is that people with acne commonly use products for months or years, increasing their risk of side effects from benzene.

What is the Risk?

  • Leukemia
  • Blood cancer
  • Blood disorders
  • Acute Myeloid Leukemia (ALM)
  • Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL)
  • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)
  • Multiple myeloma
  • Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
  • Death
