5 Million Above-Ground Pools Recalled After 9 Deaths
In July 2025, about 5 million above-ground pools that were sold since 2002 were recalled by Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup after at least 9 children drowned, including one child in Texas.
All of the children were able to get into the pool without a ladder by using a compression strap as a foothold, according to the Safety Warning from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
What Happened?
Safety officials are aware of at least 9 children who drowned since 2007 after climbing into an above-ground pool using the compression strap. These recalled pools have been sold nationwide since 2002.
These tragic drowning deaths have been reported in six states, including California, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin and Missouri.
What is the Problem?
The recalled pools measure 48-inches tall or higher. These pools have a compression band running around the exterior of the pool to give it support. The pools also have multiple vertical support legs. The problem is that the compression band goes on the outside of the legs, creating a gap that children can use as a foothold to get into the pool.
Above-ground pools are NOT being recalled if the compression band does not go outside the vertical support legs (so there is no gap).

Where Were These Pools Sold?
The recall involves certain above-ground pools that were sold by Intex, Bestay and Polygroup since 2002. They were sold at stores like Walmart, Target, Sears, Lowe’s, Kmart, Toys ‘R’ Us, Sam’s Club, The Home Depot, Big Lots, Costco and BJ’s (among others), Amazon.com, and other websites.
What Should I Do?
If you own an above-ground pool with a compression strap, check if it was recalled and contact the manufacturer to get a free repair kit:
Until the repair kit has been installed, safety officials are urging customers to prevent children from accessing the pool unsupervised, or drain the water out of the pool.
