Overview

3M Company sells the Bair Hugger, a forced-air warming device that is routinely used during long surgeries. It warms that patients by circulating heated air across a patient’s skin. The units consist of a heater, blower, hose, and a disposable blanket draped over the patient.

3M Bair Hugger Injuries

Lawsuits have been filed by people who developed the following injuries:

  • Antibiotic-resistant infection (MRSA)
  • Hip replacement infection
  • Knee replacement infection
  • Burn injuries
  • Amputations
  • And more

Bair Hugger Infections

The inventor of the 3M Bair Hugger, an anesthesiologist named Dr. Scott Augustine, now recommends against using it. In 2010, he told the New York Times that it can spread bacteria associated with hospital-acquired infections. According to one lawsuit (PDF) filed by a man in Michigan:

“This escaped air creates air flow currents that flow against the downward air flow of the operating room. As this warmed air rises, it deposits bacteria from the floor of the surgical room into the surgical site.”

Hip & Knee Implant Infection Lawsuits

3M has been hit with several lawsuits from people who developed deep joint infections after a Bair Hugger was used during their hip replacement or knee replacement. These infections typically must be treated with several surgeries — one to remove the infected implant and clean the joint, and a second surgery to implant a new artificial joint.

MRSA Infection and Amputation Lawsuit

In July 2015, a lawsuit (PDF) was filed by a Texas man who developed an antibiotic-resistant MRSA infection and had to have his leg amputated after a routine knee replacement went awry. He blames the 3M Bair Hugger for causing his infection. Click here to read more.

Burn Injury Lawsuit Settled for $250,000

Many people have been severely burned when anesthesiologists disconnected the hose from the 3M Bair Hugger blanket and blew hot air directly onto their skin. In patients with poor circulation, the risk of burns injuries is even higher. According to one case report (PDF), a 40 year-old woman suffered 3rd-degree burns after 110ºF air was blown onto her body during surgery. She had permanent scarring despite skin grafts and plastic surgery. Her lawsuit against the anesthesiologist was settled for $250,000.
