April 1, 2022 — Unilever has recalled two types of Suave 24-Hour Protection Antiperspirant Spray products after finding benzene, a toxic cancer-causing chemical.
The recall involves the following products:
- Suave 24-Hour Protection Aerosol Antiperspirant Powder (4-oz. and 6-oz.) — UPC 079400751508 and 079400784902
- Suave 24-Hour Protection Aerosol Antiperspirant Fresh (6-oz.) — UPC 079400785503
The recall was issued after Unilever found “slightly elevated levels” of benzene. The company claimed that the amount of benzene in the products “would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences.”
Even so, Unilever warned that exposure to benzene “can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life threatening.”
Just a few weeks before the recall, Unilever attempted to dismiss a class action lawsuit that was filed by consumers who claimed that there was benzene in Suave 24-Hour Protection Powder aerosol antiperspirant spray. The lawsuit was filed after the independent lab Valisure reported finding benzene in the product, and many others.
Valisure has also found benzene in other products, including dozens of antiperspirant and deodorant sprays. Other companies have already recalled certain batches of Brut, Sure, Old Spice, and Secret aerosol spray products.
