Texas Risperdal LawyerSeptember 15, 2015 — A new study (PDF) has found that adolescents on Risperdal are 5-times more likely to be diagnosed with gynecomastia.

The study was published in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology by Dr. Mahyar Etminan and colleagues at the University of British Columbia.

After analyzing data on about 400,000 men between the ages of 15 and 25, they found that users of Risperdal were 3.9-times more likely to develop gynecomastia than those who did not take the drug. When the cohort was restricted to children and teens under 18 years old, the risk of gynecomastia was 5.4-times higher than for non-users.

The researchers cautioned:

“Given that this condition carries a high psychological burden, clinicians might want to consider prescribing antipsychotics with a lower propensity for gynecomastia to young or adolescent males.”

This is one of the largest studies to specifically investigate the risk in children and teenagers, but it is not the first. In 2003, a study by Findling et al. involving 489 boys between the ages of 5-15 observed gynecomastia in 4.5% of subjects.

Last year, researchers led by Dr. Etminan also published a study linking Risperdal with a 69% increased risk of gynecomastia among middle-aged men.

Risperdal is a powerful anti-psychotic drug that treats psychiatric illnesses by blocking D2 receptors in the brain. One side effect is the release of prolactin, a pregnancy hormone that stimulates breast growth and milk production in both males and females. Hundreds of lawsuit now accuse drug-makers of downplaying the risk while illegally marketing Risperdal to children.
