September 25, 2012 — The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) and the bicycle company Specialized are voluntarily recalling approximately 12,000 Specialized Globe bicycles from model years 2008 and 2009. The company has received four reports of the front fork breaking, which has caused facial fractures, head injuries, shoulder injuries, and cuts.
The defective forks are Kinesis Aluminum Forks with aluminum alloy steerer tubes. The front fork steerer tube can break. The fall hazard from this incident is severe and potentially life-threatening, especially in traffic or at high speeds.
The following bicycles are a part of the recall:
- Globe Elite
- Globe Sport
- Globe Sport Disc
- Globe Centrum Comp
- Globe Centrum Elite
- Globe City 6
- Globe Vienna 3
- Globe Vienna 3 Disc
- Globe Vienna 4
- Globe Vienna Deluxe 3, 4, 5, 6
The model name of each bicycle is printed in various locations on the bicycle. The “Specialized” logo is printed on the lower frame tube. The recalled bicycles come in a variety of colors, including gun, silver, black, khaki, navy, bone, blue, charcoal, burgundy, and gold. Some of the higher-end models were sold with accessories.
The products were sold by retailers throughout the United States between July 2007 until July 2012. The bicycles cost between $550 and $1,100. The defective Kinesis fork was manufactured in China.
The company is recommending that customers should immediately stop riding the bicycles. They can return to an authorized Specialized retailer for a free replacement fork.
