January 23, 2015 — Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has returned to Congress after being severely injured by an exercise band, telling reporters he won’t rule out filing a lawsuit against the manufacturer.
Reid was exercising with a resistance band in December when it snapped, severely injuring his right eye and flinging him into a filing cabinet. He broke four ribs, several bones near his eye, and may have had a concussion, according to his office.
He was hospitalized overnight in Las Vegas.
In an interview with KNPR, Reid said it was possible the vision in his right eye would never be fully restored due to blood accumulation inside the eye.
Despite his injuries, he has been working every day and holding meetings at home for most of this month. Earlier this week, Reid returned to Congress.
Senator Reid is not the only person to be severely injured by a resistance band. Since 2011, over 600,000 products have been recalled and dozens of people have been severely injured when the bands unexpectedly broke or snapped.
Just a couple weeks ago, a recall was issued for the SKLZ Resistance Trainer because a defective weld on the belt could break. Three people were seriously injured by blunt trauma to the leg, a puncture wound, and a laceration.
