October 8, 2015 — Senator Harry Reid has filed a lawsuit against the maker of an exercise band that snapped and caused severe injuries, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The lawsuit (PDF) was filed in Clark County District Court in Nevada against Hygenic Corp. and Performance Health LLC, manufacturers of the TheraBand resistance exercise band.
The incident occurred in January 2015. According to the complaint:
“The TheraBand was mounted to a sturdy object in his bathroom. While in use, the TheraBand broke or slipped out of Mr. Reid’s hand, causing him to spin around and strike his face on a cabinet.”
Reid allegedly suffered loss of vision in his right eye, a concussion, broken orbital bones, severe disfigurement and bruising to his face, hand injuries, facial lacerations, scarring, and broken ribs.
The lawsuit claims that the manufacturers knew about the risk of injury but failed to provide adequate warnings — especially for elderly uses and people with injuries to their hands or feet.
Reid is currently the Senate minority leader, but said in March that he will not seek re-election next year.
This is not the first time exercise bands have come under scrutiny. They are responsible for dozens of serious injuries and several manufacturers have issued recalls.
