Listeria Food Poisoning
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that is commonly found in soil and water. Animals (such as dairy cows) can also be infected with the bacteria without showing symptoms and transfer it to meat or milk products.
Although infections with Listeria are rare, they tend to be very serious — especially for young children, older adults, and people with vulnerable immune systems. The most serious complications are bacteremia (blood infection) and meningitis.
The FDA warns:
“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
