March 12, 2016 — As European regulators weigh growing safety concerns about Roundup, Monsanto is facing a growing number of lawsuits alleging that the popular herbicide causes non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
On February 19, a lawsuit (PDF) was filed in federal court in Hawaii by Aaron Johnson. He mixed and applied Roundup on a macadamia farm from 1997 to the present, used it to clear land in Hawaii, and applied it around his own home. In January 2014, he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
On March 9, a wrongful death lawsuit (PDF) was filed in California by the family of Anthony McCall, a farmer for 40 years in Cambria, California. His widow said he attempted to avoid exposure to most pesticides, but took fewer precautions with Roundup because he thought it was safe. He died from complications of lymphoma treatment in December 2015.
Earlier this month, European regulators were delaying a vote to renew a 15 year license for Roundup after several member states expressed concerns. According to Bloomberg:
“In February, testing found traces of glyphosate in German beer and organic panty liners sold in France. Other tests have found chemical residue in British bread, as well as in the urine of people across Europe.”
In March 2015, an agency of the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that Roundup probably causes cancer in humans. The organization specifically noted that non-Hodgkin lymphoma may be connected to Roundup based on several studies in farmworkers in different parts of the world.
Roundup contains glyphosate, a chemical that blocks the production of amino acids that plants need to grow. It has boomed in popularity since the 1990s, when Monsanto genetically engineered Roundup-resistant crops. In 2014, global sales hit $7.8 billion.
