What is the problem?

September 21, 2017 — Renthal has announced a voluntary recall for all Gen 1 and Gen 2 motorcycle clip-on handlebars after receiving 22 reports of cracked clamps.

No injuries have been reported, but broken handlebars could result in a motorcycle accident with serious injuries or death.

Testing that was developed by Renthal since the introduction of the clip-on handlebars indicates that the material the handlebar clamps were manufactured from is susceptible to Stress Corrosion Cracking.

According to a statement released by Renthal:

“We have seen this failure mode in the market place and we need to recall this product to prevent risk of injury to our customers.”

Renthal is asking consumers to immediately stop using the recalled clip-on handlebars and contact the company for a free replacement.

For more information, contact Renthal toll-free at 877-736-8425 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MT Monday through Friday or online at www.RenthalRoad.com and click “Clip-on Recall” in the middle of the page.

What Clip-On Handlebars Were Recalled?

The handlebars were sold for about $215 at Renthal motorcycle dealers nationwide in the U.S. from April 2009 to July 2017.

The recalled Gen 1 handlebars have a 40-mm tube and they have been sold since 2009. The recalled Gen 2 handlebars have a 20-mm tube and they have been sold since 2014.

They were manufactured in the United Kingdom and distributed in the U.S. by LeMans Corp. of Janesville, Wisconsin, and Tucker Rocky Corporation Inc. of Fort Worth, Texas.

What is Stress Corrosion Cracking?

Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) occurs under the simultaneous influence of mechanical “tensile” stresses and an aggressively corrosive environment. The problem is that the combination of mechanical stress and corrosion can induce crack propagation.
