No Recall for Fisher-Price Soothe & Glow Seahorse

February 28, 2014 — The Fisher-Price Soothe & Glow Seahorse is one of the most popular toys on the market, has not been recalled despite numerous reports of it getting dangerously hot, smoking, melting, and nearly catching on fire within seconds of changing the batteries — even when the product is not turned on. The defect is very concerning, considering that the toy is meant to be placed in a child’s crib while they are sleeping.

In the last 16 months, the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) has received at least 10 complaints. In addition, Amazon.com has received dozens of complaints. According to one account:

“After new batteries were inserted as directed, the lead wire got red hot and melted the plastic. This is a fire hazard and could have seriously injured my child, who typically sleeps with it in his crib. Please take immediate action so no children are hurt!”

ABC News 7 in Denver interviewed Triana Burdick, a mother who has two Soothe & Glow Seahorses for each of her children. She says when she changed the batteries for the first time, it felt hot, made a sizzling noise, and smoke poured out of the toy. Burdick said:

“It was melting the plastic on the inside. The first thought that went through my head was like, ‘Oh, my God, it could have caught fire. It could have caught a blanket in her bed on fire.’ I freaked out right away.”

Fisher-Price may have quietly addressed the problem without issuing a recall. The products linked to the fire hazard all have three-battery designs. However, Soothe & Glow Seahorses currently on the market have a two-battery design that does not appear to have the same defect. Fisher-Price did not acknowledge any design modifications and told ABC News 7 they have no plans to issue a recall.
