Garden of Life RAW linked to 11 salmonella illnesses in 9 states, 1 hospitalization.April 25, 2016 — The FDA has closed its investigation into an outbreak of Salmonella linked to Garden of Life Raw Meal organic shakes after at least 33 people were sickened in 23 states.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) confirmed that victims were infected with the Salmonella Virchow strain. Illness onset dates range from December 5, 2015 to March 18, 2016. At least six people were hospitalized, and no deaths were reported.

The problem is that RAW Meal Organic Shake & Meal products have a long shelf-life and may still be in consumers’ homes. On January 29, Garden of Life LLC recalled the products in chocolate, vanilla, vanilla chai, and original flavor.

Consumers who are unaware of the recall could continue to eat the products and get sick. The FDA warns:

“Infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. If you have symptoms or concerns, please talk to your doctor.”

Salmonella is one of the most common causes of food poisoning. An estimated 1.2 million illnesses occur every year in the United States. The illness produces symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever for 4-7 days. People with vulnerable immune systems, older adults, and children are more likely to develop severe, life-threatening complications. About 450 people in the United States die every year after being infected with Salmonella.
