Raw Farm Cheddar Cheese Recalled for E. coli
In February 2024, Raw Farm Cheddar Cheese was recalled after it was linked to an outbreak of E. Coli illnesses in Texas and other states. This cheese was sold nationwide at Sprouts Farmers Market and Bristol Farms. Other retailers may have also sold this cheese.
What Happened?
Raw Farm Cheddar Cheese was linked to a multi-state outbreak of E. Coli O157:H7 infected at least 10 people in four states, including California (4), Colorado (3), Texas (1) and Utah (2).
No deaths were reported, but 4 people were hospitalized due to a severe illness. One person developed Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a life-threatening type of kidney failure that can occur with E. Coli O157:H7.
How To Identify Recalled Cheese
The recall involves RAW FARM® Raw Cheddar blocks and shredded cheese products, including:
- Original flavor — all sizes of blocks and shredded packages
- Cheddar with added Jalapeño flavor — all sizes of blocks and shredded packages
What Should I Do?
Anyone who may have eaten Raw Farm Cheddar Cheese should be vigilant for symptoms of E. Coli, which can occur anywhere from a few days after eating contaminated food, or up to 9 days later.
The symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and/or vomiting.
Some people who are infected with E. Coli O157:H7 develop severe bloody diarrhea and dehydration, which can lead to severe complications like Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, and neurologic problems.
