January 9, 2015 — The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a recall for about 52,000 resistance training bands because they can snap and hit another person, resulting in severe injuries.
The recall involves the Pro Performance SKLZ Recoil 360 All-Position Resistance Trainers, which are leash-type devices that provide resistance during exercises.
The product consists of a belt, an 8-foot resistance cord, and a safety handle. The handle is held by a partner while the user runs, jumps, or shuffles.
Unfortunately, Pro Performance has received three reports of the weld on the resistance trainer breaking. This has cause severe injuries, including blunt trauma to a lower leg, a puncture wound, and a laceration.
According to the CPSC:
“A weld on a ring on the resistance trainer’s belt can break during use and cause the resistance trainer’s flexible cord to quickly and unexpectedly retract and hit an exercise partner who is holding the other end.”
The recalled products are marked with “SKLZ” followed by an arrow. Products with an arrow before the “SKLZ” brand are not included in the recall. The recalled products were sold at Dick’s Sporting Goods, Academy LTD, other retailers, and online from January 2013 through December 2014 for about $40.
Consumers should immediately stop using this product and contact SKLZ for a free replacement resistance trainer, including free shipping.
This is not the first time resistance bands have been linked to severe injuries. In 2011, the CPSC recalled the Target Embark Resistance Band (click here for a case report). Other products have been recalled in recent years and dozens of people have been injured when the bands snapped.
