December 6, 2024 — A woman who was severely burned and permanently scarred by a Maxi-Matic Pressure Cooker has filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer.
The lawsuit describes her severe, disfiguring burn injuries that occurred when the lid suddenly blew off the pot without warning. The accident involved a Maxi-Matic Elite Platinum 8-Quart Digital Electric Pressure Cooker (Model #EPC-813).
The lawsuit was filed by Letitia A., a woman from Ohio who bought her Maxi-Matic Pressure Cooker in November 2020 and used it normally.
In November 2022, while using it to cook turkey legs at her mother’s house in Dearborn, Michigan, she was severely burned when the lid suddenly blew off the pot and ejected scalding-hot food and liquid. Her lawsuit explains:
She was severely burned and rushed to the ER at a hospital in Dearborn, but her injuries were so serious that she had to be transferred to a specialized Burn Center at a hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Over the next few months, she also required extensive follow-up treatment at another hospital in Ohio.
According to her lawsuit, these 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns immediately caused “horrendous pain and suffering,” but she still suffers from scarring, disfigurement, and trauma.
Her lawsuit describes “permanent physical scars and disfigurement in addition to significant emotional scars, from which she will never fully recover.”
In her lawsuit, she accuses Maxi-Matic of negligence for selling pressure cookers that are defective because the lid can open when the unit is pressurized, resulting in an explosion of burning-hot food.
Her lawsuit was filed against Pick Five Imports (d/b/a Maxi-Matic USA, a California corporation) on November 20, 2024, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan (Southern Division) — 2:24-cv-13076-DPH-KGA.
