Benzene and Cancer

Benzene is a sweet-smelling chemical that is extremely flammable and evaporates into the air very quickly. Mechanics, railroad workers, and other people are exposed to benzene breathing it or absorbing it through the skin. Once benzene gets inside the body, it is metabolized and accumulates in the bone marrow. Benzene is known to cause cancers that occur when the bones produce abnormal blood cells.
