Lawsuits involve serious side effects of Xarelto, including bleeding in the brain, intestines, and uncontrollable bleeding resulting in death. As of July 17, six lawsuits seeking class action status were also filed in Canada.
As of July 15, there were over 800 lawsuits pending in a centralized federal Multi-District Litigation (MDL No. 2592) in Louisiana, overseen by Judge Eldon E. Fallon.
However, earlier this week, four separate lawsuits were filed on behalf of another 198 people. Injuries blamed on Xarelto included bleeding complications, including intestinal bleeding, hematuria, subdural hematoma, bleeding in the brain, and death.
The first “bellwether” trial is expected to begin on August 1st, 2016. Another three trials are scheduled to begin between then and October 17th, 2016. The outcomes are not binding on other cases, but they can help lawyers negotiate settlements or other agreements to resolve the litigation without taking every case to trial.
Xarelto has been marketed as superior to warfarin, but there are some major differences. One is that warfarin can be reversed with a dose of Vitamin K in an emergency, but Xarelto has no reversal agent. If a patient on Xarelto starts bleeding or needs unexpected surgery, they are at risk of death from uncontrollable bleeding.
