Nap Nanny Infant Recliners Linked to 6 Deaths

May 29, 2014 — The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) has reported another tragic death linked to Nap Nanny Infant Recliners, which were recalled in December 2012.

It is the sixth death that has occurred in the recliners. The latest incident occurred in Hopatcong, New Jersey. An 8-month-old girl was secured by a belt and was found partly hanging over the side of the Nap Nanny recliner, trapped between the product and a crib bumper. Four other infants have died this way. Infants can also suffocate on the inside of the Nap Nanny. Since 2009, the CPSC has received at least 92 incident reports.

The CPSC reminds parents that the safest place for a baby is in a bare crib on his or her back. Never add cushions, pillows, quilts, or comforters to your baby’s crib, bassinet, or play yard. They warn:

“Our Safe to Sleep experts urge all parents and caregivers who own a Nap Nanny or Nap Nanny Chill recliner to stop using it immediately.  We do not want any other family to suffer the loss of their child or experience serious injury to their child.”

The manufacturer, Baby Matters LLC, is no longer in business and is not selling new products. The recliners should not be sold in stores, but they may still be around as hand-me-down gifts, yard sales, and online auction sites. CPSC urges consumers to dispose of the products immediately because they are hazardous and illegal to sell.

In December 2012, the CPSC filed an administrative complaint against Baby Matters LLC to demand a recall. In June 2013, the agency reached a settlement agreement that included a recall and ended legal proceedings. About 165,000 products were sold between 2009 and 2012 for about $130 at major retailers, including Amazon.com, Buy Buy Baby, Diapers.com, and Toys R Us/Babies R Us.
