February 6, 2020 — Multiple lawsuits have been filed after a deadly explosion at Watson Grinding & Manufacturing Co. in Houston, Texas.
The explosion occurred just after 4 a.m. on Friday, January 24. The first lawsuit was filed about 8 hours later, by a Houston woman whose house was severely damaged by the massive chemical explosion.
Two people died at the scene of the explosion, one person was hospitalized, and at least 18 people “self reported” to hospitals for injuries and evaluation.
Attorneys for Harris County filed a lawsuit on behalf of area residents who were affected, claiming Watson “failed to exercise its duty of care to protect the public” with its use of the chemical propylene.
Several individual lawsuits have been filed by people who were injured, as well as wrongful death lawsuits on behalf of the two men who died, Frank Flores and Gerardo Castorena.
Nearly 450 homes and buildings were damaged within a 1/2 mile of the facility and found significant damage, such as homes shifted off their foundations, blown out windows and doors, cracked walls, roofs caving in, debris from the explosion, and other property damage.
Investigators believe that a tank containing highly-flammable propylene began leaking and an electrical spark ignited the gas.
