Minnesota Issues Health Warning for 16 Caramel Apple Brands

January 14, 2015 — The Minnesota Department of Agriculture has issued a consumer advisory for possible Listeria contamination in 16 brands of pre-packaged caramel apples.

The warning is part of a larger recall involving Granny Smith and Gala apples produced by Bidart Brothers, a California-based company that supplies apples to caramel apple manufacturers during last year’s holiday season.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has reported 32 illnesses, including four people in Minnesota. Listeriosis has contributed to at least three deaths. The vast majority of victims reported eating pre-packaged caramel apples before getting sick.

Health officials in Minnesota previously warned about caramel apples from Cub Foods, Kwik Trip, and Mike’s Discount Foods, which carried Carnival brand and Kitchen Cravings brand caramel apples.

The recall has been expanded to include the following brands of caramel apples, which were made in Minnesota last year using apples from Bidart Brothers which have now been recalled:

Listeriosis is a life-threatening type of food poisoning caused by the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. Symptoms begin from 3 to 70 days after consuming contaminated food, and may include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.

Pregnant women may only experience a mild flu-like illness, but the infection can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or infection of a newborn. At least 10 pregnant women have been infected in the outbreak linked to caramel apples.
