Maradol Papayas Linked to Deadly Salmonella Outbreak

July 24, 2017 — At least 47 people in 12 states were infected with Salmonella in a deadly outbreak linked to Caribeña Maradol papayas from Mexico that were sold in Texas.

Twelve of the victims were hospitalized and 1 death was reported in New York City, according to the outbreak investigation from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

The papayas have not yet been recalled, but health officials traced the illnesses to Caribeña-brand yellow Maradol papayas distributed by Grande Produce in San Juan, Texas. Investigators say the farm(s) that produce the papayas appear to only be located in Mexico.

Maradol papayas are green before they ripen and turn yellow. No green papayas tested positive for Salmonella, but 3 out of 10 samples of yellow Caribeña papayas tested positive for two strains of Salmonella that have also been found in people who fell ill.

Consumers should not eat Caribeña papayas regardless of the color, according to an investigation by the FDA.

The outbreak was identified on June 26, 2017, when the CDC reported a cluster of illnesses from the same strain of Salmonella, suggesting that everyone got sick from eating the same food. The outbreak was linked to papayas on July 17, 2017.

The papayas that tested positive for Salmonella were collected at grocery stores in Baltimore, Maryland. The papayas were also sold in Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, and Virginia.
