February 10, 2023 — Texas AG Ken Paxton agreed to a $600,000 settlement with Magellan Terminals Holdings, L.P. over a deadly fire in Corpus Christi, Texas.
The fire and explosion occurred on December 5, 2020 at a bulk petroleum terminal, while a Magellan contractor was cleaning out light crude oil material from the bottom of a storage tank.
The fire was extinguished that same morning, but tragically, 6 contract workers were injured and 1 later died as a result of the explosion.
Magellan paid the state $588,000 in civil penalties and $12,000 in attorney’s fees to resolve violations of the Texas Clean Air Act.
Magellan’s corrective action plan includes “prohibiting the use of certain equipment during tank cleaning, implementing new tank cleaning procedures, and requiring contractors to use certain personal air monitors during tank cleaning,” according to the settlement.
