Liver Failure Linked to Saba ACE Diet PillsAugust 5, 2014 — The journal Gastroenterology has published a case report of a 35 year-old woman who developed liver failure and needed a transplant after taking Saba Appetite Control and Energy (ACE), a weight-loss supplement.

The women took three tablets of Saba ACE diet pills in a 2-day period. Two weeks later, she developed jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), a symptom of liver damage.

Laboratory tests, imaging, and a liver biopsy showed extensive necrosis (dead tissue) and inflammation. One week later, she developed leg edema (swelling) and accumulated fluid in the abdominal cavity (ascites).

Her condition continued to worsen, culminating in brain damage due to the buildup of toxins in her blood (encephalopathy) and excessive bleeding. She was given a liver transplant. One week later, her condition began to improve.

Green Tea Extract and DMAA

Saba ACE contains green tea extract, which has been linked to several cases of liver damage, including two cases of liver failure that needed transplantation. One case was linked to SlimQuick diet pills.

Saba ACE also contains 1,3-dimethylamylamine (DMAA). Last year, have were 43 cases of hepatitis (liver inflammation) in Hawaii associated with OxyElite Pro, a weight-loss supplement that originally contained DMAA, with two liver transplants and one death.

The researchers concluded:

“This case of drug-induced fulminant liver failure was likely due to Saba ACE supplement. Although DMAA and green tea extract are potentially hepatotoxic, the exact hepatotoxic agent in this supplement and whether drug interactions or possible contamination played a role in the drug-induced liver injury in this case are unclear.”
