August 31, 2016 — Ton Shen Health of Chicago, Illinois has issued a recall for Life Rising DHZC-2 Chinese herbal supplements due to a risk of lead poisoning.
Testing by the FDA showed the tablets have 56-times the amount of lead that would pose a health risk for children.
The agency is investigating six adverse events, including two deaths that may have been caused by DHZC-2.
The Cook County Department of Health in Chicago said two children who may have taken DHZC-2 had elevated lead levels. Lead poisoning is especially dangerous in children because it can cause developmental delays, learning disabilities, and behavior problems.
DHZC-2 tablets have been on the market for a few years. They come in 1.6-oz plastic bottles and were sold nationwide in retail stores and online. All lots have been recalled and sales are suspended.
The FDA is asking retailers to contact any customers who bought the recalled products in last 36 months and inform them of the recall.
Lead is a toxic metal that accumulates in the body and causes high blood pressure, infertility, nerve damage, muscle pain, and irritability. Even small amounts of lead are harmful, especially during pregnancy.
The symptoms of lead poisoning in adults include abdominal pain, vomiting, lethargy, irritability, weakness, behavior or mood changes, delirium, seizures, and coma. Young children may not have obvious symptoms.
