June 23, 2014 — Self interviewed several women who filed lawsuits after they used dietary supplements and suffered life-threatening complications.
OxyElite Pro Lawsuit
One lawsuit was filed by a woman who says her heart heart attack was caused by OxyElite Pro.
The woman, Karina Lujan, is a 37 year-old mother of four from Texas. She says she started taking OxyElite Pro in 2012 and again in 2013. The OxyElite Pro she used contained dimethylamylamine (DMAA), an illegal stimulant drug that has been linked to cardiovascular side effects.
“One day after a dose, Lujan says she was walking up a flight of stairs when she suddenly felt out of breath. She started sweating and felt tremendous pain and pressure in her upper body, and her arm went numb. It turned out she was having a heart attack.”
Although she survived the heart attack, Lujan must take blood-thinning drugs and medications to control her rapid heart rhythm. Due to her health problems, she has lost 10-20% of her heart function and she has been unable to exercise at the gym or ride her bike.
SlimQuick Lawsuit
Another lawsuit was filed by Karen Jacobs-Poles, a nurse in Philadelphia who used SlimQuick. She started using it in 2011 after viewing a commercial that promoted its “all-natural” ingredients, including green tea extract and berries.
After a couple weeks, she started feeling more tired than usual and a coworker noticed that her eyes turned yellow — she had jaundice, a symptom of liver damage. Blood tests found dangerously high levels of liver enzymes. She was diagnosed with acute hepatitis (liver inflammation), and an enlarged liver. It took nearly a year before her liver healed and almost another year before she did not feel exhausted.
Jacobs-Poles filed a lawsuit against Platinum US Distribution, but the company denies responsibility for her injuries and says SlimQuick is made by a third party.
