October 27, 2020 — Marathon Oil and several subcontractors have been hit with the first wrongful death lawsuits after a deadly construction accident in Houston, Texas.
The accident occurred on October 5 at the site of the new headquarters for Marathon Oil Corporation.
At around 1:30 p.m., a precast concrete staircase collapsed around the 13th and 14th floors of the 15-story tower. As they fell, the weight triggered a domino effect of slabs falling one after the other.
Three men died and 1 was injured when they were unable to escape tons of falling rubble around the 4th and 5th floors of the building.
According to the lawsuit: “A cascade of falling material loudly announced the oncoming mortal danger, but there was no time or space to escape.”
Two of the victims worked for Gulf Shore Erectors, a subcontractor that was responsible for setting, installing and repairing the staircases. The lawsuits were also filed against East Texas Precast, which made the concrete for the staircase, and other construction companies.
