February 23, 2024 — A man from California who was burned by a recalled pressure cooker has filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer.
The plaintiff, Damien S., claims that he was severely burned by a defective Bella 5-Quart Pressure Cooker (Model Y-PC20US-11P) in December 2023.
According to his complaint, he was able to easily open the lid when the pressure cooker was still pressurized, resulting in an explosion of burning-hot food. He blames his injuries on the defective “safety” features, which failed to lock the lid until it was safe to open.
He cites advertising claims about numerous safety features, including an “[e]xtremely safe and secure locking system” or “safety valve” which was supposed to create “added safety and control.”
Instead, he claims that these features failed to work as advertised. Just four months before he was burned, Sensio recalled 860,000 Bella Pressure Cookers, including the one that caused his burn injuries.
The recall warns that the “pressure cooker’s lid can unlock and be removed during use, causing the hot contents to unexpectedly splash out.”
The recall notice also warns that 61 people suffered burn injuries, some of which involved 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns to the face, torso, arms, and hands.
His pressure cooker lawsuit was filed against Sensio on February 16, 2024 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York — Case Number 1:24-cv-01191.
