Texas Kenmore Dehumidifier Lawyer

August 3, 2012 — The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a voluntary recall of Kenmore dehumidifiers due to the risk of short-circuiting, which could cause a severe fire. Sears and Kmart, the retailers who sell these products, have reported 107 incidents where the products over-heated, began smoking, melted, or caused a fire. Three people have been injured by smoke inhalation, and there is more than $7 million in property damage.

The recalled Kenmore dehumidifiers are manufactured by Chinese-based LG Electronic Appliance Company. They were manufactured between 2003 and 2009, and sold in Kmart and Sears for $140-220. The products come in 35-, 50-, and 70-pint sizes. They are about two feet tall, 15 inches wide, and 13.5 inches deep. The Kenmore logo is located on the front and top, and there is a front-loading water bucket.

The CPSC is recommending that customers immediately turn off the device, unplug it, and go to www.kenmoredehumidifierrecall.com for more information. Customers cannot return the product to the retailer — the retailer will not accept the product or offer a refund. People who wish to get a refund must register online, print out a shipping label, and send in the cord and model/serial number on their unit.

The CPSC is asking for people to continue reporting injuries or fires caused by the products.

This is not the first major recall to come from dehumidifiers manufactured by LG. In December 2009, nearly 100,000 dehumidifiers were recalled after the CPSC received reports of several fires. However, only 2% of people responded to the recall. In September 2011, the CPSC updated the recall to increase awareness. The dehumidifiers were linked to $1.5 million in property damage, nine serious fires, and one home had $500,000 in damage. The dehumidifiers were sold between January 2007-June 2008 at Home Depot, Walmart, Ace Hardware, Do It Best, and other retailers.
