December 3, 2015 — JEM Raw Chocolate, LLC has issued a recall for its full line of all nut butter spreads after they were linked to an outbreak of Salmonella that has sickened 11 people.
Illnesses have been reported from nine states since July 18, and the outbreak strain has been identified as Salmonella Paratyphi B variant L(+) tartrate(+), according to an update from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
Case Count by State: California (1), Colorado (1), Georgia (1), Hawaii (1), Idaho (1), Illinois (1), North Carolina (1), New Jersey (1), and Oregon (3).
Products included in JEM Raw recall:
- Cashew Cardamom – Sprouted Cashew Almond Spread
- Cinnamon Red Maca – Sprouted Almond Spread
- Hazelnut Raw Cacao – Sprouted Hazelnut Spread
- Superberry Maqui Camu – Sprouted Almond Spread
No products have tested positive for Salmonella, according to the CEO of the company. However, eight people who were interviewed reported eating nut butters before getting sick, including six who specifically reported eating JEM Raw brand sprouted nut spreads.
The products were sold in 1oz, 6oz, and 16oz glass jars. They were distributed nationwide in retail stores and through mail-order from June 2015 through November 2015 under the JEM Raw Organics brand-name.
Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps within 12-72 hours after infection. The illness typically lasts 4-7 days, and most healthy adults recover without needing medical treatment.
No hospitalizations or deaths have been linked to JEM Raw products, but infection can be life-threatening in rare cases, according to the FDA:
“Infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
