Does Januvia Cause Pancreatic Cancer?

No one knows if Januvia causes pancreatic cancer. In order to prove cause-and-effect, researchers would have to randomly prescribe Januvia or a placebo to a random selection of people and look for higher rates of pancreatic cancer. Obviously, this type of study would be unethical.

Researchers can look at rates of pancreatic cancer among diabetics who use Januvia versus other treatments. According to a 2011 study published in Gastroenterology, Januvia was linked to a 2.7-fold increased risk of pancreatic cancer. However, according to the author of the study, this does not prove that Januvia causes pancreatic cancer:

“This analysis of the FDA database does not establish that pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer and thyroid cancer are caused by GLP-1 therapy. It simply raises the level of concern that they may be, and that the appropriate prospective studies are required to rule them out.”

Januvia Pancreatic Cancer Causes

The exact cause of pancreatic cancer is still unknown. It is possible that Januvia causes pancreatic cancer, but difficult to know for sure. Many people who take Januvia have other risk factors that could cause pancreatic cancer (diabetes, pancreatitis, family history, etc.).

Technically, all pancreatic cancers are caused by cells that somehow mutate and begin dividing and growing uncontrollably. These cells accumulate into a mass called a tumor. They can also travel to other areas of the body and cause cancer in other organs.

Risk factors that could cause pancreatic cancer include:

  • Medications that target the pancreas (such as Januvia or other GLP-1 drugs)
  • Age (80% of cases occur in people between 60-80 years old)
  • Gender (men are 30% more likely to get pancreatic cancer)
  • Race (African Americans are more likely to get pancreatic cancer than white people)
  • Chronic pancreatitis
  • Cirrhosis of the liver
  • Family history (genetics)
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking cigarettes
  • Obesity
  • Diet high in fats, fried food, and meat (smoked or processed)
  • Alcoholism
  • And more
