Jack Brown Produce Recalls Apples for Listeria RiskDecember 21, 2017 — Jack Brown Produce Inc. has issued a recall for certain “Apple Ridge” apples that may contaminated with the food poisoning bacteria Listeria monocytogenes.

The recall involves “Apple Ridge” Gala, Fuji, Honeycrisp and Golden Delicious apples distributed between December 11 and December 16, 2017 in Michigan, Georgia, Missouri, Indiana, and Ohio.

The recalled apples can be identified by the following lot numbers on the bag label and/or bag closure clip:

  • Fuji: NOI 163, 165, 167, 169, 174 — sold in 3-pound clear plastic bags, 5-pound red mesh bags, tray-packed, or sold individually.
  • Honeycrisp: NOI 159, 160, 173 — sold in 2-pound clear plastic bags, tray-packed, or sold individually.
  • Golden Delicious: NOI 168 — sold in 3-pound clear plastic bags
  • Gala: NOI 164, 166 — sold in 3-pound clear plastic bags, 5-pound red mesh bags, tray-packed, or sold individually.

Jack Brown Produce recalled the apples after a routine sample tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes by Nybald Orchards Inc.

Jack Brown Produce has stopped distributing apples processed by Nybald Orchards while they investigate the source of the problem.

Infections with Listeria can be serious or even fatal — especially in children, elderly adults, people with weak immune systems. Pregnant women may also suffer complications.

The symptoms of infection with Listeria may include a high fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Pregnant women may have no symptoms, but suffer a miscarriage.

The company urges consumers who bought “Apple Ridge” Gala, Fuji, Honeycrisp or Golden Delicious apples on or after December 11 to destroy the apples and contact the company for a full refund.

Consumers can contact Jack Brown Produce by calling 616-887-9568 (Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET) and ask for Lisa Ingalls.
