Many side effects of inferior vena cava (IVC) filters can be deadly, especially when pieces of the filter break and travel to the heart. The risk is especially high when retrievable IVC filters, such as the Bard Recovery or G2/G2x, are not removed when they are no longer needed.

What is the problem?
Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) filters are often used as an alternative to blood-thinning medications to prevent life-threatening pulmonary embolisms (blood clots in the lungs). Unfortunately, the benefit of preventing a pulmonary embolism may be outweighed by deadly side effects of an IVC filter.
FDA Warning
In 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a Safety Communication after receiving nearly 1,000 reports of adverse events since 2005. The risk of life-threatening complications increases when retrievable IVC filters, meant for short-term protection against pulmonary embolism, are not removed as soon as they are no longer needed.
Case Report of IVC Filter Deaths
November 2010 — Archives of Internal Medicine — Dr. William Nicholson of York Hospital in Pennsylvania and colleagues evaluated 189 patients who received a Bard Recovery or Bard G2 retrievable IVC filter from April 2004 through January 2009.
During the study, 35 patients died. In addition 16% (13/80) had at least one strut fracture from their filter and 25% fractured and traveled in the vein. Five patients had an IVC filter travel to the heart, three experienced life-threatening symptoms of a rapid heartbeat or fluid build-up around the heart, and one died suddenly at home.
Wrongful Death Lawyer in Texas
Wrongful death lawsuits allege that a victim’s death was caused by a defendant’s negligence, and therefore the victim’s survivors (usually a close relative) deserves financial compensation. These lawsuits can be difficult and complex. For example, insurance companies have a financial interest in limiting their liability.
Our trial lawyers believe every individual who died as a result of an IVC filter deserves to have his or her case brought before a judge and jury. We fight for maximum compensation on behalf of our clients, for economic and non-economic damages:
- Lost earnings from the deceased person
- Medical and funeral costs
- Loss of support and consortium
- Loss of benefits or inheritance
- Punitive damages
- And more
