July 22, 2015 — IKEA is recalling about 27 million chests and dressers after two children died because the furniture tipped over.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that in February 2014, a 2 year-old boy from Pennsylvania died when a 6-drawer MALM chest tipped over and pinned him against his bed. In June 2014, a 23 month-old boy from Washington died after he was trapped under a 3-drawer MALM chest. Neither chest was secured to a wall.
Many other incidents have been reported:
“IKEA and CPSC have also received 14 reports of tip-over incidents involving MALM chests, resulting in four injuries. Since 1989, IKEA is aware of three additional reports of deaths from tip-overs involving other models of IKEA chests and dressers.”
IKEA will provide free anchoring kits to anyone with children’s drawers taller than 23-1/2 inches or adult dressers and drawer chests taller than 29-1/2 inches.
The action is not a typical recall — the furniture comes with anchoring kits included. Customers are not supposed to return the furniture. Instead, IKEA wants to provide a new kit with replacement tip-over restraints, wall-anchoring hardware, instructions, and a warning label to stick on the furniture.
Customers can get a kit by visiting an IKEA retail store, going to www.IKEA-USA.com/saferhomestogether or calling (888) 966-4532.
