July 15, 2016 — IKEA is recalling about 80,000 pressure-mounted safety gates and gate extensions because the locking mechanism can open unexpectedly.
Children have fallen down stairs when the gate opened unexpectedly. Some of the incidents have required medical attention. A third-party investigation discovered that the locking mechanism is not reliable.
IKEA has received 55 reports of incidents worldwide, including 10 injuries that resulted in two concussions, cuts, and bruising. Four of those incidents occurred in the United States, resulting in cuts and bruising to children.
The Patrull KLÄMMA safety gates were previously recalled in May 2015 because the friction between the wall and the pressure-mounted gate is not strong enough to hold it in place.
The Patrull safety gates were sold at IKEA stores nationwide and online from August 1995 through June 2016 for between $10 and $60.
Consumers should immediately stop using the gate and return them to the store for a full refund. Proof of purchase is not required. IKEA said it has “zero tolerance regarding child safety” and that the faulty gates had opened despite “approved tests to applicable standards.”
Products included in the recall:
- Patrull safety gate
- Patrull safety gate extension
- Patrull FAST safety gate (white)
- Patrull FAST safety gate (beech wood)
- Patrull KLÄMMA safety gate
- Patrull KLÄMMA safety gate extension
