December 10, 2018 — Safety groups are warning that Kia and Hyundai have been hit with a disproportionate amount of complaints about vehicles spontaneously catching on fire.
The Center for Auto Safety, a safety non-profit organization, has identified complaints about fires in the following Kia and Hyundai cars:
- 2011-2014 Kia Sorento
- 2011-2014 Kia Optima
- 2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata
- 2011-2014 Hyundai Santa Fe
- 2010-2015 Kia Soul
The Center for Auto Safety has identified nearly 250 complaints of Kia or Hyundai vehicles that caught on fire without warning, which is an 85% increase from when the nonprofit first warned consumers about the problem earlier this year.
Between June and October 2018, there were 103 complaints submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Center for Auto Safety is demanding that Kia and Hyundai recall 2.9 million vehicles due to a fire hazard.
