July 11, 2018 — Hundreds of lawsuits are moving forward against Monsanto for allegedly failing to warn about the cancer risk of Roundup weed-killer.
U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria will allow lawyers for cancer victims to present expert testimony linking Roundup and cancer.
He cautioned that the evidence is “rather weak,” but determined that the opinions of three experts were not “junk science” to be excluded.
Even so, he said that it could be a “daunting challenge” for lawyers to convince him to allow the lawsuits to proceed to a jury trial.
Lawyers claim that Monsanto has known about the potential risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma for years, but failed to adequately warn consumers about the potential risk.
Monsanto vehemently denies that Roundup poses any risk of causing cancer, pointing to hundreds of studies showing the ingredients are safe. The company marketed Roundup as “safer than table salt.”
Even so, the cancer-research agency of the World Health Organization has classified glyphosate, the active chemical in Roundup, as a “probable human carcinogen” based on recent studies.
In a separate lawsuit, trial is now underway in San Francisco for a school groundskeeper who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after years of using Roundup.
